National Sports Day is celebrated each year in India on August 29th to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. On the birth anniversary of one of the greatest field hockey players, the Indian government aims to highlight the importance of sports and physical fitness in our daily routine. As youngsters most of us used to play some sport or the other or at least included some form of the sport in our school or college routine, but after joining the workforce or expanding our families somehow we don't give as much time and importance to our physical fitness.
The situation becomes worse when we enter into our 30s or 40s. But do you know participating in sports or making them a priority in our life becomes even more necessary during that time to lead a happier and healthier life? While we all are aware of the importance of being physically fit, let us convince you why should take time out of your busy schedule and take up a sport.
Since sports involve various movements that result in the working of different muscle groups, participating in sports on a regular basis leads to improvement of strength, flexibility and overall endurance. Weight-bearing sports like tennis or basketball help promote osteoporosis by promoting bone health, as per a 2011 study.?
Participating in organised sports gets your heart pumping which improves your blood circulation and ultimately strengthens your cardiovascular system. As per a study, if you partake in regular physical activity it can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, hypertension and triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood).
Many supports like golf and badminton require precision as well as coordination in the movements of players. Regular playing of such sports is known to improve motor skills and also have a positive impact on overall balance. Sports also provide an enjoyable way to burn calories and manage your weight, and if you are physically fit you tend to have more control over your limbs and hence a better balance.
Physical activity, especially in the form of sports, releases endorphins which are the feel-good hormones that help promote overall mental well-being by managing depression and alleviating the feeling of loneliness ultimately reducing stress and feelings of anxiety. Sports provide a healthy outlet for all your negative emotions and also help in dealing with difficult emotions.
Team sports are a fun way to get your body moving. Rather than spending time alone in the gym or during a jog, if you make it a point to include playing badminton or football or any other sport you are more likely to look forward to the activity rather than just succumbing to it. It will also result in you being regular with your physical exercise since a friend or teammate will always be there to show up and keep to accountable.
