Quality Of Education In Kerala Not The Same As Earlier? Top State Official Compares It To Bihar

Kerala has consistently been recognized for its achievements in the education sector. The state has shown impressive performance in literacy rates, access to education, and overall quality of education.?

But the reality seems to be a little different. Kerala Director of Public Instruction S. Shanavas expressed concerns over the current quality of education in the state on Tuesday.?

Quality of education in Kerala now comparable to Bihar, says Shanavas?

"Gone are the days, when the quality of education in Kerala was compared to Europe. It is now being compared to Bihar," Shanavas said during an interaction with the school teachers.?

While students seem to be getting good marks - every year, 69,000 students get A+ - some among them don't even know how to write correctly.?

"Some of them even do not know how to write their name correctly. This is gross injustice with the other students," he said.?

Not to worry, says State Education Minister?

Shanavas's remarks caused quite an uproar in the state.?

The State Education Minister V. Sivankutty said, "These remarks should not be mistaken as that of the state government."?

"Kerala's education standards have been applauded by UNICEF and have been ranked high in the national rankings as well. Our aim is to strengthen it even further," he added.?

In Kerala, the pass percentage of Class X reached as high as 99 per cent as compared to three decades ago, when it was around 60 to 70 per cent.?

In 2023, around 4.5 lakh students appeared for the SSLC Class X public examination, and the overall pass percentage was 99.70.?

The pass percentage of Class XII is also impressive, at 82.95% in 2023.?

Kerala's literacy rate has seen an upward trend and is 94.00 per cent as per the latest population census (2011). This was much higher than the average literacy rate in India of 77%.?
