A total of 881,254 Indian citizens renounced their citizenship over the last 7 years till September 30, 2021 according to information available with the Ministry of External Affairs, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha as per ANI.
The data indicated that a majority of Indians renounced their Indian citizenship in 2019.
131,489 Indians did the same in 2015, 141,603 in 2016, 133,049 in 2017, 134,561 in 2018, 144,017 in 21019 and in 2020 it was 85,242 while 2021 till September 30 has seen 111,287 instances.?
Telangana Rashtriya Samiti leader Kotha Prabhakar Reddy raised a question in this regard.?
He asked, "whether provisions have been made for applicants to upload documents online, with an upper limit of 60 days for the renunciation."
"Citizenship of India may be renounced under provisions of Section 8 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 read with rule 23 of the Citizenship Rules, 2009. The online portal for renunciation of Indian citizenship has been activated in August 2021. End-to-end processing of renunciation applications is carried out in the online Citizenship Module," replied Rai.
A person usually loses citizenship of India if he or she applies for and becomes a citizen in a foreign land. It usually happens when one moves abroad and chooses to make it his of her permanent residency.?
In that event, that individual can no longer hold an Indian passport, vote during elections, or pay taxes in India.?
That person lose the rights he or she is entitled to as an Indian citizen and the duties that are applicable to foreigners automatically begin to apply to them.
