Initially, the fast track court had awarded death sentence to all four, which was upheld by the High Court. The four facing punishment are Mukesh, 27, Pawan, 20, Vinay, 21, Akshay, 29.

There were six men involved in the crime ¨C one of them, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide while in jail, and the sixth person involved was a juvenile at the time of the crime. He was granted three years in a correction facility by Juvenile Justice Board and was released in November 2015.

Nirbhaya was 23-year-old paramedic, when she was gangraped on a moving bus. The sheer nastiness of the rape brought the entire nation to the streets, demanding for justice and for the government to change the status quo on women¡¯s safety.
The SC commended the work of the Delhi Police and bringing the criminals to book.
"The investigations done by Delhi Police was fair and impartial and the probe has passed the test of fairness and reliability," the SC said.
