A childhood friend of Anna?Sebastian?Perayil, the 26-year-old Chartered Accountant who allegedly died from extreme work pressure at Ernst & Young (EY), has revealed that she spoke to her just hours before her death. The friend, Ann Mary, corroborated most of the allegations Anna's mother, Anita Augustine, raised in her letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani.??
Ann Mary told a Malayalam news channel on Thursday that during their last conversation, which happened just two hours before Anna's death, the 26-year-old had revealed that she was contemplating resignation due to the unbearable work pressure.??
"On that day too, she told me that she had a late-night meeting. She used to tell me how her manager said that nobody on that team had stayed beyond three months and how he wanted Anna to be the one breaking the trend," Ann Mary said.??
According to her, Anna was working up to eighteen hours every day, including on weekends, which took a toll on her health. She also revealed that Anna was planning to visit her parents in Kerala at the end of July, after the project she was assigned to was completed.??
However, this did not happen, and on July 20, Anna, who had been complaining about experiencing chest pain for some time, collapsed and died.??
Ann Mary also rejected EY's claim that Anna was already suffering from a health condition and added that when she tried to raise her concerns with the HR department, she did not get any support.??
Another childhood friend also told local media that Anna had discussed with her parents and friends about quitting her job if she was not able to get a transfer to the Kochi office, as she was struggling to cope with the pressure and loneliness in Pune.
