In what is being described as the first of its kind discovery, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has found artifacts including two decorated ¡®legged coffins¡¯ with skeletons, furnaces and other items. The findings came from an excavation in the Baghpat district, which began in 2018.

They also found rice and urad dal in pots, cattle bones, wild pig and mongoose buried along with bodies.?
According to ASI Institute of Archaeology director SK Manjul, the artifacts could be as old as 2,000 BCE and could belong to a warrior class in the area.

He also added that the artifacts excavated from Baghpat are unique and are different from Harappan sites in upper Ganga-Yamuna Doab region.
ASI said that the present excavation is carried out to understand the extension of the burial site and also habitation area in relation with earlier findings of 2018.
