The Bombay High Court has said that it is important to educate and sensitise men instead of asking girls to stay safe. A Bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj K. Chavan made the observation on Tuesday while hearing a suo motu case on the recent sexual abuse of two 4-year-old girls at a school in Thane's Badlapur.??
The HC bench of Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj K. Chavan said the state education department could step in to ensure children are taught in school about gender equality and gender sensitisation from the pre-primary level itself.??
"Male dominance and male chauvinism are still there. Until we teach our children at home about equality, nothing will happen. Till then, all these laws like Nirbhaya and all will not work," the bench said.??
The court further noted that boys also need to be taught what is right and wrong when it comes to interacting with the other gender.??
"Why don't we tell the boys what's right and what's wrong? You need to tell the boys what they shouldn't do. Teach them to respect the other gender, respect women... We had moral science classes. The education department needs to step in," the court observed.??
The court also suggested setting up a committee comprising a retired judge, a retired policeman, a retired principal, a woman IPS officer, and a member of the Child Welfare Committee to study the issue and recommend rules and guidelines to be followed in schools to avoid such incidents.??
The sexual abuse of two four-year-old kindergarten girls by an attendant of a private school in Badlapur had sent shockwaves across Maharashtra. On 17th August, police arrested an attendant of the school for allegedly abusing the girls.?
Amid allegations of a cover-up by the school management, police confirmed that CCTV footage of 15 days from the Badlapur school is missing.??
"The school education department had sought a report over the incident. We found that the CCTV footage of 15 days is missing. We have told the police to investigate how it went missing. Since the crime was committed near the washroom, we sought CCTV footage and then the committee was told it had gone missing," Maharashtra Minister Deepak Kesarkar said, while adding that a probe has been ordered.??
