The Supreme Court of India has unveiled a new statue of Lady Justice while moving away from its traditional look that dates back to the ancient Roman empire. Unlike other statues of Lady Justice depicted around the world, the one unveiled on Wednesday in the judges' library of the Supreme Court doesn't have a blindfold around her eyes and is holding a copy of the Indian Constitution, instead of a sword.??
The blindfold and sword were two powerful symbolic representations on the statue of Lady Justice, suggesting equality before the law, meaning that the dispensation of justice should not be influenced by the status, wealth, or power of the parties and that justice was impartial and swift.??
However, these two depictions have been changed on the new statue, which, according to some reports, are aimed at shedding the colonial imprint and traditional attributes.??
While the sword has been replaced by a copy of the Constitution, the new statue has retained the scales of justice in the right hand of Lady Justice, symbolising a societal balance and the significance of careful consideration of facts and arguments from both sides before arriving at a verdict.??
According to reports, the new Lady Justice statue was commissioned by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, and the idea behind removing the blindfold was to send a message that the law is not blind in India.??
The sword has been replaced to imply that the might of the Constitution, not of the sword, prevails in the justice delivery process.??
Last month, President Droupadi Murmu had also unveiled the new flag and insignia of the Supreme Court to commemorate the 75th year of its establishment.
