Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Thursday proposed the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. Justice Chandrachud, who is set to retire next month, has written to the Union Government proposing the name of Justice Khanna, the second-most senior judge in the Supreme Court, as the next Chief Justice of India.??
In his letter to the Union Law Ministry, CJI Chandrachud stated that since he is demitting office on November 11, Justice Khanna would be his successor.??
Once approved by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice and will hold the position until May 13, 2025, when he retires.??
Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court in January 2019.??
Justice Khanna, born on 14 May 1960, is the son of Justice Dev Raj Khanna, who retired as a judge from the Delhi High Court. He is also the nephew of former Supreme Court judge Justice Hans Raj Khanna.??
Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983 and began his practice in the District Courts in Delhi.??
He was appointed an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and made a permanent judge in 2006.??
In his career as a Supreme Court judge, Justice Khanna has been part of several notable cases, including the independence of the judiciary from RTI and the Right to Privacy, where he ruled that once a matter becomes a public record, no privacy can be claimed for it.??
Justice DY Chandrachud, who took over as the Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022, created history as it was the first time the son of a former CJI was elevated to the post of the top jurist in the country. Judges of the Supreme Court retire at the age of 65.
