After Sachin's No 10, BCCI To Retire Dhoni's Iconic No 7 Jersey

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly decided to retire the No. 7 jersey of the Indian Cricket team, which had become synonymous with former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Why Dhoni's jersey has been retired

According to reports, BCCI has informed players in the national team, especially the debutants, that they cannot choose No 7 for their jersey.

The move, a rarity in sports, is often associated with the best players of the game and is done as a mark of respect for their on-field achievement.

Dhoni, who made his India debut in 2004, led the team to all three white-ball ICC titles -- T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011, and Champions Trophy 2013 -- while wearing the No. 7.

Dhoni, who played 350 ODI wearing the No. 7 jersey, retired from the short formats in 2020, though he continues to be associated with his IPL team, the Chennai Super Kings.

This is only the second time the BCCI has retired a jersey. The first was the iconic No 10 jersey of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
