As crazy as it might sound a lake in Bengaluru has caught fire. The Bellandur lake in India's Garden city caught fire late on Thursday.

According to reports, the flames were triggered by methane gas formation there as a result of illegal industrial waste dumping. A large amount of weed growing in the lake is also said to have aggravated the fire.
¡°Around 5.30 pm, smoke started billowing from the lake,¡¯¡¯a resident told local media.?

¡°Waste has been dumped in the lake deliberately. Either someone has set it on fire, or the chemicals inside the lake may have got ignited,¡± a fire department official said.
The fire was burning for at least three hours before it was doused. It also filled the air with thick white toxic fumes.
This is not the first time Bellandur lake has caught fire. In August 2016 a similar incident was reported, when it was spitting out toxic foam and fire.

It first made international headlines in 2015 after it emitted toxic foam, spilling over the lake, into nearby roads and even residential areas.
The lake in the middle of the city has been virtually turned into an illegal garbage dumping pit, for years making it a hellhole spewing poison.

Every time when the lake hits headlines for the wrong reasons, government and local authorities promise to crackdown on illegal waste dumping and encroachments, but the repeated incidents of fire show no actions have been taken.
