Two former Prime Ministers of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao along with eminent agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan have been honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
They join LK Advani and Karpoori Thakur who were also awarded Bharat Ratna in 2024.
"Narasimha Rao steered India through critical transformations and also enriched its cultural and intellectual heritage," Modi said on social media.
Rao's visionary leadership, Modi said, was instrumental in making India economically advanced and laid a solid foundation for its prosperity, growth.
"Bharat Ratna to Charan Singh dedicated to his incomparable contribution to country," the prime minister said.
"Swaminathan made monumental contributions to country in agriculture and farmers' welfare," Modi said.
He played a pivotal role in helping India achieve self-reliance in agriculture and made outstanding efforts in modernising it, the prime minister said.
Charan Singh, a freedom fighter and farmers leader was also the third Deputy Prime Minister and the fifth Prime Minister of India.
He has also served as the chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Union Minister for Home Affairs and Finance.
Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao, PV Narasimha Rao, was the 9th prime minister of India from 1991 to 1996.Rao, who was born in Warangal district of present-day Telangana is credited to opening up the Indian economy during his term as PM. Rao was also the first person from South India to become the Prime Minister of India.

Dr. MS Swaminathan?was an agriculture scientist and was known as the father of India's green revolution.
Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, to a Kerala-origin family, Swaminathan is credited for his collaborative scientific efforts with Norman Borlaug and spearheading a mass movement with farmers and other scientists and backed by public policies that saved India and Pakistan from certain famine-like conditions in the 1960s.
