Earlier this year the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) had conducted a nationwide donation drive to raise funds for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Though the official figures are unknown, it is said that around Rs 25,000 crore were collected during this drive that was held between January 15 and February 17.
But now it has emerged that at least Rs 22 crore of this may not turn out into the actual amount.
That is because some 15,000 cheques that were collected by the VHP have bounced.
According to an audit report of Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra, a trust set up by the Centre for the construction of the temple, said the cheques bounced due to lack of funds in bank accounts or some technical error.
Trust member Dr Anil Mishra said banks are working to solve the issue of technical errors and they are asking people to make donations again.
Among the cheques, around 2,000 were collected from Ayodhya, while the others were from across the country.
In February, the Akhil Bhartiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) had said that during the 44-day long fund collection drive, donations were collected from 12 crore families over 5.5 lakh cities.
The temple that is being built in Ayodhya, where Hindus believe was the birthplace of Lord Ram is expected to take some three years for the construction.
"The main temple will be built in three to three and a half years and will cost Rs 300-400 crore. The expenditure on the development of the entire 70 acre land there will exceed Rs 1100 crore," Swami Govind Dev Giri Maharaj, a member of the trust had said.
