Computer science, electronics and electrical engineering graduates emerged as the most popular choice of software and IT majors in the first phase of the ongoing placement drive at Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU).
Most of the computer science graduates got big offers, including the highest package of Rs 1.20 crore offered by Oracle (US).

According to the officials of the training and placement office of the institute, the biggest offers have made in computer science. At every high quality campus, the maximum number of students placed, have been from the computer science discipline. The graduates of computer science were the most hired ones during the first phase of placement drive. Even last year, the highest package of Rs 2.27 cr was offered to a computer science student by Google US, they said.
This year's placement drive that began on December 1 will go on till December 19. So far, 90 companies have recruited over 500 students, including pre-placement offers during the drive. In the first phase, several global and Indian campus recruiters have visited the campus and offered jobs to most of the students.

Among them, only three international offers were made by Oracle (US) and Microsoft (US), with the former offering the highest package of Rs 1.20 crore to a student of computer science. The second highest offer of Rs 90 lakh was made to two students of the same department.
As many as 839 students had registered for this year's placement drive, comprising B.Tech (624) and integrated dual degree (215) and about 422 students have been hired so far, excluding 90 pre-placement offers that were also made during the ongoing drive.

In the computer science and engineering department, 60 out of 62 students have been placed while 18 of 19 students were placed in IDD. In electrical department, 80 students were registered, of which 56 had bagged job offers and 13 out of 21 in IDD. In electronics, 76 out of 79 were placed. In mechanical engineering department, 38 out of 80 got job offers. In metallurgical department, 25 of 49 got jobs, in B Tech while 4 of 14 had been placed whereas in ceramic engineering, 5 of 41 in B.Tech and 3 of 11 in IDD and 33 of 99 in chemical engineering while 11 of 69 in B.Tech civil engineering and 4 of 20 in IDD had been placed so far.
In pharmaceutical department, only one student out of 13 bagged a job offer while none in IDD. The placements of mining department will commence with the arrival of Coal India Limited on Wednesday and Thursday. There are a total of 65 students in B.Tech while 19 in IDD.

Other schools of IIT-BHU comprising bio-chemical engineering, bio-medical engineering, engineering physics, industrial chemistry, mathematics and computing, material sciences and technology, witnessed placements of 30 out of 81 students. The highest package was offered to students of mathematics and computing.
According to training and placement cell of IIT-BHU, a couple of companies are still visiting the campus for recruitment. The drive is open till December 19. On Tuesday, two companies including government-owned Cdot and DIT visited the IIT campus for recruitment. About 3-5 companies are scheduled to visit the campus till December 19. The next phase of the placement drive is scheduled to commence from January, informed the officials.
