Amarjeet Singh was working when I called him on a Thursday morning, and understandably so, being the middle of the week. I could hear loud instructions being exchanged behind as we spoke of his new initiative -- Mission Sarbat Da Bhala.
53-year-old Singh is dedicated to giving proper education to children who lost their parents and livelihood to women who lost their husbands to Covid-19.
"These kids who have lost their parents due to Covid need help. We guide them towards government aid that is already available for them. We generate funds through our NGO and provide education, uniforms, books to these children," Singh said.
He has even organised a Family Marathon to generate funds and seamlesslyhelp those in need. "If these girls who got orphaned so young receive proper education, they will never have to ask anyone for anything. I want them to sustain themselves and be independent," he added.
When I first spoke to him during the peak of Covid in May 2021, he was driving his car that he turned into an ambulance with free 24*7oxygen supply for anyone in need.?
A school cab drive in pre-pandemic times, Singh set up a full oxygen cylinder in his own car that he earlier used as a cab to pick up children. He who himself struggled to make ends meet, was determined to save as many lives as he could with the limited resources he had.
But he didn't stop there. He wanted to continue to work for the society and that's when Mission Sarbat Da Bhala was born. It is a charitable trust dedicated to social-economic growth of those who suffered due to Covid and struggle due to poverty.?
Sarbat da bhala is the final term in the Sikh prayer called the Ardas. The term outlines one of the most important of Sikh principles and is a point that is repeated in the Sikh Scriptures. The Sikh concept of sarbat da bhala which means "blessings for everyone" or literally "may everyone prosper".
Family Marathon is one of the many initiatives organised by Singh and his Gurugram-based NGO. It will be held on March 13, 2022 and anyone who wishes to donate for the orphaned girls' education can participate with a meagre fee of Rs 500.
In recent past, Singh even organised a blood camp for thalassemia and cancer patients. He also organised a donation camp for poor children and distributed woollen clothes and food to them.
Today, Singh has 15 members working with him at the NGO and his next mission is to procure a ground from government to provide free cremation to those who cannot afford it.
"I want to always help those who are in dire need and I will continue to do so, no matter what," he said.?Singh said he wants as many people as possible to participate in the upcoming marathon so that he can help as many children.
To continue to make arrangements for the programme,?Singh then disconnected the call, hoping hundreds would turn up for the marathon.
