Mohit Yadav, also known as Monu Manesar, a Cow vigilante, has been detained by the Haryana Police over inflammatory social media posts concerning the recent violence in Nuh.
According to reports, the Bajrang Dal leader was detained on Tuesday from near Gurugram under bailable sections of the Information Technology Act.??
Bajrang Dal's parent organisation, the Vishva Hindu Parishad, confirmed to PTI that the cops picked him up.
In a viral CCTV footage of Monu market, two men, probably policemen, can be seen taking Monu Manesar with them in a friendly manner and without any resistance.
Though he was not physically present in Nuh in the Mewat district of Haryana during the communal clashes in July, in which at least six people were killed, he is accused of inciting the violence with his social media posts.
The clashes erupted in Nuh during a religious procession, ignited by rumours surrounding his attendance at the event.
Earlier, another cow vigilante, Raj Kumar, known as Bittu Bajrangi, was also arrested by the Haryana Police in connection with the Nuh violence. But he was granted bail after two weeks.
28-year-old Monu Manesar, who is known to work closely with the Haryana Police, made a name for himself as a self-proclaimed cow protector.
Despite the Haryana Police making it clear that cow vigilante groups can only act as informers, Monu and his group have been regularly carrying out chase and capture of suspected cattle smugglers.
The group has also regularly posted videos of their actions on social media.
He has been keeping a low profile for some time after the Rajasthan Police booked him for the abduction and murder of two Muslim men earlier this year.
Monu's men allegedly kidnapped Junaid and Nasir, both residents of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, on 15 February 2023.
The charred bodies of the two cousins were found in a vehicle in Haryana's Bhiwani on February 16.
Monu Manesar is one of the 21 accused named in the FIR in the double murder case.
Last month, Rajasthan Director General of Police Umesh Mishra had said that Monu Manesar had no direct involvement in this incident.
Following his arrest by the Haryana Police, their counterparts in Rajasthan are likely to seek his custody.
"We have received information that Haryana Police has detained Monu Manesar, who is wanted in Nasir and Junaid lynching case. Haryana Police is carrying out its further procedure, and our officers are in contact with them. When their procedure is completed, our District Police will begin theirs," SP Bharatpur, Mridul Kachawa said.
