Ummar's death took place not very far from where Pehlu Khan died after being assaulted by cow vigilantes in April this year. The 55-year-old was also transporting cows when he too, was ambushed by the so-called gau rakshaks and thrashed. He succumbed to his wounds two days later, creating a national outrage about the killings by cow vigilantes.
PM Narendra Modi had warned that strict action will be taken against cow vigilantes, but that did not stop such groups from assaulting people they suspect randomly. Between Pehlu Khan*s death and Modi*s statement, there had been 26 cattle related violent incidents in the country.
