As many as 30 cities in India which include the like of Jaipur, Amritsar, Kolkata, Mumbai, Kozhikode face a potential water risk if action is not taken to adapt to climate change, says a study conducted by WWF.?
Water is an issue in many cities worldwide and WWF's new water risk scenarios estimate that hundreds of millions of people may be in danger, as per a report in IANS.?
As per the WWF Water Risk Filter, 100 cities will suffer the most by 2050 and at least 350 million people will be affected.?
The list includes Beijing, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Mecca and Rio de Janeiro.?
"The future of India's environment lies in its cities. As India rapidly urbanises, cities will be at the forefront both for India's growth and for sustainability," said Sejal Worah, Programme Director, WWF India.?
"For cities to break away from the current vicious loop of flooding and water scarcity, nature-based solutions like restoration of urban watersheds and wetlands could offer solutions. This is our chance to re-evolve and re-imagine what the future of the cities could be," Worah added.
