The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts indicating the persistence of very dense fog conditions over North India for the next four days. Additionally, severe cold wave conditions and severe cold day conditions are expected to prevail in Delhi and other parts of North India. The IMD has issued the following alerts:

Fog conditions to prevail
- Very dense fog conditions are anticipated over Punjab and Haryana, including Chandigarh and Delhi, from January 17 to 21.
- Uttar Pradesh is likely to experience very dense fog on the mornings of January 17 and 18, with dense fog in isolated pockets for the subsequent three days.
- Uttarakhand and north Madhya Pradesh are expected to witness very dense fog on January 17 and 18, 2024.
- Isolated pockets of Bihar, north Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are likely to experience dense fog during January 17 to 21.
- Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are forecasted to have dense fog from January 17 to 19.
- Himachal Pradesh is expected to experience dense fog on January 17 and 18, while Jammu division, Gangetic West Bengal, and Odisha are likely to witness it on January 17.
- Severe cold day conditions are anticipated to persist in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on January 17 and 18.
- Uttar Pradesh is expected to face severe cold day conditions on January 17.
Flights, trains delayed
According to the Delhi Airport FIDS (Flight Information Display System), a total of 120 flights, including both domestic and international arrivals and departures, were delayed on Wednesday due to dense fog. The FIDS also reported that 53 flights, comprising 21 domestic arrivals, 16 domestic departures, 13 international departures, and 3 international arrivals, were canceled and not operating due to fog and other operational reasons at Delhi Airport.
The dense fog has also affected train services in Delhi, causing delays. Passengers were observed waiting at the New Delhi Railway Station (NDRS) as several trains experienced delays amid poor visibility due to the persistent fog.

- A rise of about 2¡ãC in minimum temperatures is very likely over Northwest India during the next 2 days, with no significant change thereafter.
- A rise of 2-4¡ãC in minimum temperatures is very likely over East India during the next 4 days, with no significant change thereafter.
- No significant change in minimum temperatures is likely over the rest of the country during the next 5 days.?
