The timely intervention of a doctor and the cabin crew of an Air India Express flight saved the life of a passenger who suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight.
A middle-aged woman was found unresponsive in her seat aboard Air India Express flight I5 764 from New Delhi to Pune last week.
The flight's cabin crew made an appeal requesting the assistance of any onboard paramedics or nursing personnel due to a medical emergency.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Badamali, a senior consultant in Cardiac Anesthesia at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Bhubaneswar, who was on the flight responded to the appeal.
Dr. Badamali found the middle-aged woman seated but bent over her tray table and gasping for breath.?The woman was unresponsive and was exhibiting agonal breathing, with an extremely fast carotid pulse.
Since it was difficult to give her CPR there, Dr. Badamali, with the help of the cabin crew and some passengers removed the woman from her seat to the area near the wings.
"Once at a spacious spot, I again checked her pulse, which turned out to be abnormally rapid. I slowly started a carotid massage on her, which proved to be helpful as her pulse gradually became normal and she regained semi-consciousness. Some chest compressions were also applied on her,¡± Dr Badamali told The Times of India.
According to him despite his years of experience, the onboard incident was particularly challenging due to the lack of proper gear and equipment.
He also thanked the crew and fellow passengers who came to his help due to the medical emergency.
Upon arrival, the woman passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
