In a shocking incident, a doctor was shot dead by two unidentified assailants inside his clinic in Delhi's Kalindi Kunj. Javed Akhtar, a Unani medicine practitioner, was shot dead inside the Nima Hospital in Jaitpur in the early hours of Thursday.
According to police, the unidentified assailants, who appeared to be juveniles aged around 16, came to the nursing home around 1 a.m. seeking treatment for an injury.
After the injury was dressed, the two boys went inside Akhtar's cabin and shot him dead before fleeing the spot. Two nursing staff members, Gajala Parveen and Mohammad Kamil, rushed to the cabin after hearing the gunshot and found Akhtar sitting motionless in a pool of blood.
According to the hospital staff, one of the boys had visited the clinic the day before, which the police suspect was an act of reconnaissance. Police are treating the murder as a targeted killing, though the motive remains unclear.
As per the hospital staff, the duo arrived at Nima Hospital in Jaitpur, under the Kalindi Kunj Police Station area, for an injury and later requested to meet Dr. Javed. After being given an appointment to meet him inside his cabin, the accused shot him and fled the scene," said police.
Reacting to the cold-blooded murder, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called it a "blatant disregard for law and order" and questioned why doctors have been becoming easy targets in hospitals.
"A doctor at NIMA Hospital, Delhi, was shot dead at point-blank range yesterday night. According to Delhi Police, prima facie, it's a case of targeted killing¡ªunprovoked and possibly planned. Dr. Akhtar was a BUMS practitioner. May his soul rest in peace. An incident like this happening at the workplace of a doctor in the capital city of India? Isn't this a blatant disregard for law and order in the city? Why are doctors becoming easy targets in hospitals?" FORDA said in a social media post.
