Patanjali, the FMCG brand controlled by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has found itself in yet another legal trouble with allegations that non-veg ingredients are being used in its toothpaste.
A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court by lawyer Yatin Sharma, alleging that Patanjali's product "Divya Manjan" contains non-vegetarian ingredients despite being labeled as vegetarian.
Sharma accused Patanjali of misleading the public and sought action against the company for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and deceiving customers.
According to Patanjali, its dant kanti is a natural toothpaste that contains herbs, ayurvedic ingredients like neem, timbaru, turmeric and cloves and essential oil.
In July 2023, Sharma had filed a complaint with the Ayush Ministry, which responded by stating that there were no provisions for indicating non-vegetarian ingredients in products under the labelling rules.
The Ministry informed that Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani Drugs Technical Advisory Board (ASUDTAB) recommended forming a committee to determine criteria for categorising raw materials used in drugs, taking into account various religious, ethical, and regional considerations.
The Delhi HC bench of Justice Subramonium Prasad on Tuesday disposed of Sharma's plea, citing the Ministry's communication regarding the Committee's formation.?
The HC further directed the committee, constituted by the Union Ayush Ministry, to provide recommendations on establishing criteria for categorising raw materials used in drug production into vegetarian, non-vegetarian, or other categories and submit its recommendations within 10 weeks.
This is not the first time Patanjali's popular products including its ghee have come under scanner.
In 2023, BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had called Ramdev 'king of adulterators' and accused him of selling 'fake ghee' under his brand.??
In 2022, a test conducted by the Uttarakhand food safety department had found that Patanjali's 'pure cow ghee' failed to meet food safety standards and was adulterated and potentially injurious to health.
In 2021, Rajasthan had found that mustard oil sold by Patanjali was of substandard quality.
A 2020 study had found that Patanjali was among 13 brands that were selling honey that was adulterated with sugar syrup.
