In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old Delhi University student was killed in a case of hit-and-run in the national capital's Rohini. The victim, identified as Rishal Singh, a resident of Budh Vihar in Delhi, died on Saturday morning when he was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle.
According to the police, the BA student at Delhi University was on his way to deliver newspapers on his cycle when the accident happened.
The incident occurred around 6:30 am on Saturday near the RTO office in Rohini when a PCR call alerted the police about a road accident.
"Upon arrival, teams found a broken bicycle scattered with newspapers, but the victim had already been moved to BSA Hospital. He was declared brought dead," a senior police officer said.
"Initial investigations suggest that an unidentified vehicle hit him, leading to his fatal injuries," he added.
According to the victim's relatives, the boy had been working odd jobs to fund his education and support his family.
His sister Poonam said Rishal had been working as a newspaper vendor since Class 11, earning around Rs 12,000 per month. His father, who suffers from health issues, earns a meagre income from his factory job, and his mother does stitching to support the family.
She also added that Rishal's birthday was just three months away, on 11 June.
Based on the family's complaint, an FIR has been registered under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the BNS at KNK Marg police station against the unidentified accused.
"The police have not yet arrested the accused. He was very hard-working and wanted to become a stenographer. His dreams have been crushed, and the accused is still free. What will my elderly parents do now?" Poonam said.
