Close to 31,000 people have been affected by floods in Assam, following the incessant rains since May 16, that have displaced nearly 9,000 in Goalpara district alone and damaged standing crops.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin, a total of 127 villages in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Darrang and Goalpara districts were submerged while 579 hectares of crop area is now inundated as the water level of Brahmaputra river is gradually rising.
Speaking to news agency?ANI, SC Kalita of Central Water Commission, said: "The water level has been rising gradually since May 16 due to continuous rain in the region. It is increasing 1-2 cm every 2-3 hours. At present, the water level is 45.80 metres."
So far, the national and state disaster response forces have evacuated 400 flood victims in the worst- affected Goalpara district where around 22,600 people have been affected.
Thirty-three relief camps have been set up in Goalpara district, and 8,941 displaced people have taken shelter there.
Additionally, 12,054 animals, including 500 poultry birds, were affected by the deluge.
Though Meghalaya was largely unaffected by cyclone Amphan, recent rainfall has created the first wave of flood in Garo Hills.
Incessant rain in the region has caused all the water bodies in the region to swell posing serious threat to the people in the remote areas of Garo Hills of the State, according to a report by NE Now.
