After Several Attacks On Humans, Ghaziabad Bans Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino As Pets
Amid an increase in the number of attacks by Pit Bulls, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation in Uttar Pradesh has banned, the breed and two more as pets.
According to GMC, ferocious dog breeds -- Pit Bull, Rottweiler, and Dogo Argentino have been banned as pets.
"The three breeds -- Pit Bull, Rottweiler and Dogo Argentino -- are ferocious (khoonkhar), and no permission will be granted to keep these dogs. No licence will be issued. If somebody buys one of these, he/she will be responsible. All these three breeds have been banned in Ghaziabad," GMC councillor Sanjay Singh told PTI on Sunday.
Guidelines for pet owners
The civic body has also issued a host of other guidelines for pet owners.
The GMC has made registration and licence for dogs, which will be issued from November 1.
People who already have the banned breeds will have to get them sterilized within two months.
A family will be allowed to keep only one pet dog.
Pet owners living in high-rise complexes will have to use service lifts for taking their dogs out.
Pet owners have to make sure their dogs wear a muzzle while in the public.
All zonal officers of the GMC have been instructed to issue notices to pet owners to inform them about the rules and regulations passed in the board meeting.
Compulsory sterilisation of dogs?
"Sterilisation of the dogs has been declared compulsory in the board meeting of the civic body held on Saturday. Without sterilisation, certificate registration will not be granted," Mayor Asha Sharma told PTI.?
"In case the dog is younger than six months, the owner will have to submit an affidavit with an assurance that they will get the pet sterilised when he becomes one," she added.?
The mayor said dog owners love their pets, but they must also think about the children who sustained severe injuries in dog attacks.
Other civic bodies also ban Pit Bulls?
Earlier, the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the Panchkula Municipal Corporation banned the pitbull and rottweiler breeds of dogs as pets within the city limits.
In the past few months, there have been several cases of attacks on humans by Pit bulls. While in most cases, the victims were left seriously injured, in July an 82-year-old woman from Lucknow was killed in an attack by the family's pet pit bull.
Pit Bull strake again?
On Saturday, yet another case of a Pit bull attack was reported from Rewari, Haryana, where three people were left injured.
Suraj, a former sarpanch of the Baliar Khurd village and his family had just reached their home on Friday when their pet dog attacked his wife and two children.
The woman received 50 stitches on her leg, hand and head, while the two children were discharged from the hospital on Saturday.
