In a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, the Karnataka and Maharashtra governments have banned the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali.
Earlier, in wake of COVID crisis and alarming level of air pollution, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a ban on sale and use of firecrackers in the national capital.
COVID-19 cases have increased in Delhi due to the ongoing festival season and pollution, the chief minister said after the review meeting with the chief secretary, health department officials and district magistrates (DMs).
West Bengal, Rajasthan and Odisha are other states that have banned crackers this year.
The Karnataka government has decided to ban the use of firecrackers during this year¡¯s Diwali season, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced on Friday.
¡°We have discussed this issue and have decided to ban fireworks this Deepavali. An order is being issued. This is on account of COVID-19,¡± Yediyurappa said.
