Cracking down on the illegal sale of firecrackers, authorities in Delhi have seized 19,005 kg of explosives from the national capital ahead of Diwali. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday said that a total of 79 cases have been registered against violators so far.
The Delhi government has imposed a blanket ban on the sale and use of firecrackers until 1 January 2025, in view of the likely deterioration of air quality in the city during the winter.
However, in past years, the firecracker ban has been anything but effective, as Delhi residents have flouted the restrictions despite awareness campaigns and appeals by the government.
This year too, the Delhi government has instructed Delhi Police to hold meetings with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations, and religious committees to spread public awareness.
On Monday, Minister Rai launched the 'Diya Jalao, Patake Nahi' campaign, urging the public to avoid firecrackers to keep pollution in check.
He also highlighted the health risks posed by firecracker pollution, particularly to children and the elderly, noting that the resulting air pollution can exacerbate respiratory issues and irritate eyes.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dinesh Sharma, however, criticised the Delhi government over its blanket ban on firecrackers and asked why the prohibition applies only during Hindu festivals.
According to Sharma, the ban is a "conspiracy against Sanatan Dharma," and it only comes into effect on Hindu festivals such as Holi and Diwali.
"They will impose the ban now, but when the real fog starts on 25 December, they will lift the ban. Then on 1 January, they'll celebrate New Year, everyone will burn firecrackers, and the ban will be lifted," Sharma told ANI.
