Voting is underway across Delhi as the national capital goes to the polling booths on Wednesday to elect the Union Territory's next government. Voting for the 70 Assembly constituencies will take place in a single phase on Wednesday, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
The fate of a total of 699 candidates will be decided by 1,56,14,000 registered voters of Delhi. This includes 83,76,173 males, 72,36,560 females, and 1,267 third-gender voters. The electorate also includes 2,39,905 first-time voters aged 18¨C19, 1,09,368 elderly voters aged 85 and above, and 79,885 persons with disabilities.
Wednesday's election is crucial for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress, which ruled New Delhi for three consecutive terms until 2013.
Arvind Kejriwal's AAP came to power in Delhi for the first time in December 2013, forming a short-lived minority government that collapsed in just 49 days.
However, in February 2015, AAP returned to power, winning a record 67 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, leaving just three seats to the BJP, while Congress had no MLAs in the house.
In 2020, AAP repeated its electoral dominance once again, winning 62 out of 70 seats. While the BJP managed to win eight seats, the Congress, which had ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years, once again failed to win even a single seat.
Things, however, are much different for AAP in 2025 as the party battles a slew of challenges, including anti-incumbency, corruption allegations, and defections.
Unlike in the past two elections, Atishi is AAP's Chief Ministerial candidate, who is seeking re-election from Kalkaji. While Kejriwal is contesting the election from New Delhi, Manish Sisodia has been fielded from Jangpura, and Satyendra Jain from Shakur Basti.
The BJP, which is expected to make significant gains, has fielded former MP Ramesh Bidhuri from Kalkaji and Parvesh Verma in New Delhi. Kailash Gahlot, who was the Transport Minister in the AAP government, is contesting for the BJP from Bijwasan.
The Congress, which is hoping to end its seat drought, has pitted Alka Lamba against Atishi in Kalkaji and Sandeep Dikshit against Kejriwal in New Delhi.
The results of the Delhi Elections 2025 will be announced on Saturday, February 8.
