A moving video has surfaced online showing a mother elephant making a thanking gesture to a group of forest officials who pulled out her calf from the water.
The video was shared on social media by Supriya Sahu IAS, the?Additional Chief Secretary Environment Climate Change and Forests, Government of Tamil Nadu.
"Our hearts are melting with joy to see the Elephant mother raising her trunk to thank our foresters after they rescued and united a very young baby elephant with the mother," she wrote.
According to her the elephant calf had slipped and fallen into a canal in Pollachi in Coimbatore District in Tamil Nadu. The mother tried hard to rescue the baby but the young one was unable to come out due to strong water flow, she said.
She also congratulated the Forest Department team for their exceptional efforts which led to the successful reunion even though the operation was fraught with risks.
In the videos, the mother elephant can be seen trying to bring her calf back to safety, but she fails repeatedly due to the strong flow of the water.
In the second video, the forest officials are seen pushing the elephant calf out of the canal. They also took the calf to the vicinity of the mother elephant who was anxiously waiting on land for her calf to return.
As she walks back with her calf, the mother elephant repeatedly turns back towards the forest officials with her trunk raised, as a gesture of appreciation for their help.
Coimbatore District in Tamil Nadu is one of the most important elephant habitats in India.
The Anamalai hills in Pollachi are home to the second-largest elephant population in India.
