The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ¡®red alert¡¯ in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra and has warned heavy rainfall for the next couple of days.?
¡°In wake of IMD¡¯s warning of heavy rainfall for the rest of the day, schools shall remain closed today. Principals of schools where students are already in are requested to take precautions and ensure that they are sent back home carefully and safely,¡± Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation PRO said.
Mumbai and adjoining areas have been experiencing heavy rains since Monday night, which has thrown normal life out of gear.
On Wednesday the city witnessed widespread traffic jams especially in the peak hours due to widespread waterlogging on many roads.
Many trains have also been delayed after the railway tracks got inundated by the heavy rains.?
Rains also caused minor flight delays at Mumbai¡¯s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI).
Ever since the beginning of monsoon, Mumbai has been regularly hit by heavy rains and subsequent chaos.
Mumbai has so far recorded 2,865.3mm rain since the beginning of the season and the weather bureau expects the city will surpass the 3,000mm mark by the end of the week as more rain has been predicted.
