The Delhi Police have been equipped with chains, bolt cutters and other anti-riot equipment such as tear gas shells, batons and gear in order to deter protestors at the G20 Summit.?
But why are protests expected at the G20 summit at all??
The two-day G20 Summit 2023 will start on September 9 in Delhi's Pragati Maidan. Heads of state and government, and other delegates from the various member countries, as well as G20 invitees, will come to Delhi for the Summit.?
This move comes in the wake of intelligence that demonstrators may try to hold protests against some of the dignitaries invited to the G20 2023 Summit.?
Sources have said that Tibetans may try to hold a protest against Chinese President Xi Jinping during the summit, according to TOI.?
Another input was regarding miscreants planning to target Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her hotel.?
Police have been shown videos of how protestors behaved in past summits so that they could be better prepared.?Senior officers said they studied protest patterns in Hong Kong and Osaka.?
In the West, agitators usually chain or attach themselves to immovable objects at protest sites. They may also use carabiners tied to their wrists to stop being unlocked from outside.?
This makes it difficult for security personnel to physically remove them, which is why they have been provided with cutters.?
Protestors also use the 'sleeping dragon' manoeuvre, in which they handcuff themselves together through a PVC pipe. This prevents police from using bolt cutters to break the cuffs.?
Along with police, the social media team have also been alerted. They have been asked to keep a tab on protest and demonstration calls on various social media platforms.?
The police have divided the areas near venues and routes into 11 zones. TOI quoted an officer saying five to six police stations have been identified in outer north, outer and Rohini districts where protestors will be kept.?
'Moving store houses'?named 'Vikrant'??have also been provided to the police. These?are actually trucks with anti-riot equipment, which will be placed at six locations around venues and the routes of the summit. These have been constructed like a box so that it can easily reach the place where it is, escaping vandalisation.?
Police have also been asked to be prepared with blankets in case of any immolation attempt by protestors.? ?
