Days after Karnataka's capital Bengaluru witnessed a zero shadow day, now it is the turn of?neighbouring?Hyderabad. The Telangana capital will see a zero shadow day on May 9. The rare astronomical phenomenon will be seen in Hyderabad between 12.12 pm and 12.19 pm on May 9.
During the seven minutes on May 9, the sun will be directly overhead at noon, causing vertical objects to cast no visible shadows.
The city of Nizams is likely to experience another zero shadow day on August 3 this year.
According to the Astronomical Society of India (ASI)?zero shadow day can?be experienced in Hyderabad, Secunderabad?and?Kothagudem in Telangana along with Chiplun, Mandrup?and?Akkalkot in Maharashtra on May 9 and August 3.
Zero shadow day happens twice a year, for places between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees latitude when the Sun is?almost never?exactly overhead at noon, but usually transits a bit lower in altitude.
"Earth's rotation axis is inclined at 23.5 degrees to the plane of its revolution around the Sun. This also means that the Sun, in its highest point of the day, will move from 23.5 degrees south of the celestial equator to 23.5 degrees north of the equator, and back again, in a year," the ASI said.
For people living between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees latitude, the Sun's declination will be equal to their latitude twice. On these two days, the Sun will be exactly overhead at noon and will not cast a shadow of an object on the ground.?
In India, zero shadow days can be seen in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Daman And Diu, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tripura, Mizoram and Andaman Nicobar on different dates from April to September.
