As per a report in India Today, rates between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000 are being charged for cremations. It adds to the ordeal the family has had to already go through in losing a loved one.
Rajesh Singh was waiting in Varanasi's Harishchandra Ghat for his turn to perform last rites for his uncle who died from COVID. The manager asked him for Rs 11,000. When he said it should be only Rs 5000, he was asked to leave.?
Sadly it is not an isolated case. One man said that he was charged Rs 21,000 when he cremated his aunt and then Rs 25,000 when he came to cremate his grandmother.?
In Meerut, the price of wood and poojan material has jumped up. Prices are Rs 10,000, 15,000 and even 20,000.
The recent wave in COVID has the entire nation fighting to combat it. More precautions are needed as we try to keep the damage to a minimum.
