The JawaharlalNehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, who is under fire fromstudents, faculty members, members of the Opposition and activists, finallybroke his silence and urged the students to put the past behind andreturn to the varsity premises.
"Ourheart goes out to all the injured students. The incident (violence) isunfortunate," Kumar said in a brief statement.
"Iwould like to tell students that?JNU?campus is a secure place. I urgeall students to come back to the campus. Let us put the past behind," thevice chancellor said.
After the attack,there has been a demand from numerous factions demanding his resignationand accusing him of being complicit in the targeted violence against students.
Addressingthe media, Jagadesh Kumar said, "JNU is known for debate and maddiscussion. What happened on Sunday was painful for all of us. The situationwas brought under control after we called the police. Police are investigatingif the attackers came from inside or outside and facts will come out."
Meanwhile,JNU Registrar, Pramod Kumar, said that the university will recover cost of the lossescaused during vandalism.
JNURegistrar Pramod Kumar, on the other hand, said, "There have been heavylosses on the campus due to the vandalism. Those students who were involved inthe vandalism will be identified and losses will be recovered from them."
He added,"University is an open space. We would like to allow free movement on thecampus. Let the security personnel investigate the matter. We don't seestudents as two groups."
On the otherhand, JNUSU said in a tweet: "Why has the administration not registeredany complaint with Delhi Police regarding the January 5 violence where severalstudents and faculties were attacked by the mob and university property wasalso damaged?"
The JNUadministration lodged a complaint with Delhi Police regarding the vandalism in serverroom here the registration process was stopped.
While there havebeen zero arrests made in connection to the attack, the Delhi Police have lodgedan FIR against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others.
Former financeminister and senior Congress leader, P Chidambaram today said that Kumar shouldfollow his own advice and leave?JNU.
"The VCof?JNU?wants students to 'put the past behind'. He should follow hisadvice. He is the past. He should leave?JNU," Chidambaram tweeted.
On Sundayevening, more than 30 students of the university including JNUSU presidentAishe Ghosh were injured and were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre after amasked mob entered the varsity and attacked them and professors with sticks androds.
