More than two years after jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi gave an interview to a news channel while being in custody, the Punjab Police has suspended seven personnel, including two deputy superintendent rank officers, in connection with the incident. The suspension came after the SIT found dereliction of duty on the part of the seven personnel.
Those suspended on Friday are SP Gursher Singh Sandhu, DSP Sammar Vaneet, sub-inspector Reena (CIA Kharar), sub-inspector Jagatpal Jangu, sub-inspector Shaganjit Singh, assistant sub-inspector Mukhtiar Singh, and head constable Om Parkash.
"Keeping in view the sensitivity of the case, all the above officers have been suspended," said an order issued by the Punjab home secretary on Friday.
The action was taken against the cops after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police, led by the special director general of police (human rights), found that one interview of Bishnoi was conducted when the gangster was in their custody.
The SIT found that one of the two interviews aired by a news channel was conducted through video conference on the intervening night of September 3 and 4, 2022, when he was in Punjab Police's custody in Mohali's Kharar.
Bishnoi was being investigated by the Punjab Police in connection with the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala when he gave the interview, which was conducted on the premises of the CIA (Crime Investigating Agency) staff, Kharar, which falls in the jurisdiction of SAS Nagar, Mohali.
After the channel aired the interview, the Punjab Police had initially denied that it was conducted while Bishnoi was in their custody.
In the interview, Bishnoi had claimed that he had no involvement in the murder of Moosewala and that it was done by Goldy Brar. He, however, had defended the murder and alleged that Moosewala was shielding the people who killed Vicky Middukhera, who was very close to his gang.
