On Tuesday, India added 43,654 new COVID-19 cases to its tally, and out of this, 22,129, more than half of it, was reported from one state - Kerala.
There are 1,45,371 active cases in the state, while there were 156 more Covid deaths, taking the toll to 16,326.
While the COVID-19 cases in most of the states are on the decline or are on a slight increase, Kerala is on a different trajectory.
The state in its peak of the second wave had over 40,000 cases in a day in mid-May has not been able to bring the tally below the 10,000 mark yet.
And with the cases on the rise again, even with the most optimistic estimates things are not going to look good for the state before the end of August.
Amid the fears that this is the start of the third wave of COVID-19 in India, the Kerala government insists that the state is still at the tail end of the second wave and cases have plateaued.
Adding to the state's problem is the vaccine shortage.
Almost all districts have run out of vaccine stocks and if new supplies won't arrive on Wednesday or Thursday, the entire drive will have to be halted.
On Tuesday, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the Assembly that Kerala was one of the states which had implemented the vaccination drive in the most effective manner but admitted that it was facing challenges in fighting the pandemic.
He also lashed out at Union Health Minister Mansuk Mandaviya, who had recently said that 10 lakh doses of vaccine, supplied to the southern state, had been left unused.
"When the minister had made such a statement, there were only five lakh doses of COVID vaccine with the state. The present circumstance is that we are facing an acute shortage of the jab. That is the truth," Vijayan told the state Assembly.
Claiming that Kerala had made no lapse in the immunisation drive, he said the present situation was that the available vaccine stock was not enough to meet its demands.
The Chief Minister also said the state would approach the Centre demanding more doses of vaccine.
There are more troubles brewing in the state as the discontent among the small business owners over the continuing lockdowns.
With Onam, the state's biggest festival just around the corner, traders have been pressurizing the government to relax the restrictions on opening their establishments.
However, the Kerala government which had come under fire by the Supreme Court for allowing relaxations on Bakrid last week may have second thoughts on doing the same for Onam.
