A fighter never gives up till the end. A braveheart is always taking the challenge head-on. A great example is 25-year-old Dr Mariya Biju. She had an accident that put her in a wheelchair, but the lady battled the odds to do her MBBS and became a doctor at her alma mater, as per a report in The New Indian Express. She achieved the feat on February 1.?
The girl from Kerala joined the MBBS course at Al-Azhar Medical College in Thodupuzha in 2015.
¡°It was a very happy occasion for me,¡± she said.?
But in 2016, fate dealt her a cruel blow when she slipped on the wet balcony floor while trying to hang clothes on the clothesline at the medical college hostel. She fell to the ground from the 2nd floor.?
¡°The first-year model examinations were on,¡± she added.
¡°In the fall, I broke the vertebra in my neck and the thigh bone. I was given first aid at Kozhenchery hospital and then shifted to Amrita Hospital, where I underwent surgery. After spending months in the hospital, I returned to college," she went on to say.?
The following months were those of struggle.
¡°My major concern was to regain the sensation in my fingers. I underwent a series of physiotherapy for the same as I wanted to write my examinations. Even though the university allowed me to write the examinations with the help of a scribe, it couldn¡¯t be done. We would have needed another medical student to act as a scribe. So, I began reteaching myself to write."?
She did write the exam herself and is now a doctor. A true story of courage and perseverance.?
Of course, the journey ahead is long and tough, but Mariya is fighting the good fight.
