Being a business and industry friendly state is not the first thing that comes to the mind of someone when describing Kerala. In fact, the state has lagged behind when it comes to employment generation in the industry sector.
But the state is all set for a radical change with an new integrated Startup ecosystem in Kochi. The Maker Village & Bionest¡¯ which was inaugurated on Sunday is spread over 1.82 lakh sq ft.?
The eight-floor facility in Kalamassery under Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), the nodal agency of the government for state¡¯s entrepreneurship development, includes the ultra modern facilities of Maker Village that promotes hardware startups, the BioNest that promotes medical technologies, BRINC which is the country's first international accelerator for hardware startups. BRIC which aids developing solutions for cancer diagnosis and care, and a Centre of Excellence set up by the industry majors.
"Kerala Government is working for the state to have a total area of 2.3 crore sq ft of IT space (up from 1.3 crore sq ft last year). The opening of the new complex at the technology innovation zone (TIZ) is a major step towards achieving the objective,¡¯¡¯ Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in his speech adding that it give direct jobs to 2.5 lakh in IT.

The facility which is currently the biggest of its kind in the country, will beat Station-F of Paris to emerge as the world¡¯s biggest technology hub after its full expansion in 13 acres, the CM said.
According to Kerala government, various startups are already operating in the TIZ and a number of others have also been allotted space.
The TIZ now houses over 100 startups, which have filed 30 patent applications in the last 12 months alone. ¡°Perhaps, this will be India¡¯s biggest facility now based on Intellectual Property applications,¡± Pinarayi said.
