When 25-year-old Uthra died in sleep earlier this month after she was bitten by a cobra inside her bedroom many people told her parents that their daughter had a 'sarp dosha'(curse of the snake).?
Because that is the only explanation that they could give for Uthra being bitten by snakes twice within a span of over a month, that too inside the house.?
The first time Uthra was bitten by a snake was on March 2, when she was at her husband's house in Adoor. She was bitten by a viper snake inside the house. After she raised an alarm, Uthra's husband Sooraj came rushing and caught the snake. He took Uthra to a hospital after she collapsed due to the poisoning.?
At the hospital, Uthra was administered antivenom and was discharged from hospital days later. As she was still recovering, Uthra went to her parent's home in Anchal, Kollam with her one-year-old daughter.?
On May 7, a day after her husband came to visit her in Anchal, Uthra was bitten by a snake again - this time a cobra, inside her bedroom and she died in sleep. In the morning when her mother went to wake her up, Uthra was found unconscious. She was rushed to a private hospital where doctors informed that she died of a snake bite.?
After some search, people spotted the cobra inside the bedroom and beat it to death.?
But Uthra's parents refused to buy the sarp dosha claim and alleged foul play in their daughter's death. They refused to believe the claim of Sooraj who was sleeping next to Uthra that the snake had entered the room through the window.?
The parents said that since the room had an AC there was no way that the window was kept open. Snake experts also claimed that even if the snake had entered through the window it would not attack unless provoked.?
The family accused Sooraj of murdering Uthra for her property. They also alleged that Sooraj had already sold most to the gold which they had given during her marriage and used to torture their daughter for money.?
Based on the family's complaint Sooraj was summoned for questioning and after being repeatedly quizzed, he reportedly admitted of murdering his wife.Police had already collected evidence from Sooraj's online activities which included several videos on snakes and snake bites.?
They also found that he had made several calls to a snake catcher who was also interrogated. He admitted to giving the snakes to Sooraj but claimed that he did not know the purpose.?
During the interrogation, Sooraj reportedly admitted that he had planned the murder for some five months and had paid Rs 10,000 for the two snakes.??
