The Kochi Metro will now allow commuters to carry their cycles inside the trains for free to increase the usage of cycles across the city, officials said on November 17, as per a report in ANI.?
Officials said that initially permit cycles will be permitted in six stations including Changampuzha Park, Palarivattom, Town Hall, Ernakulam South, Maharaja's College, and Elamkulam.?
Should there be a huge demand, then all stations shall be given this service.?
"We have permitted cycles inside the metro to promote end-to-end connectivity with non-motorised mode of transport and also to encourage a healthy lifestyle. People are aware of the importance of fitness and exercise. This will encourage people to use cycles for their daily commute," said Additional Chief Secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma, MD, Kochi Metro.?
The cyclists are allowed to use the station elevators. The staff will manage the entering into the trains. Commuters can keep their cycles at either end of the train.?
This is a good initiative and one hopes the objective aimed at is achieved by the authorities. The more people use cycles, the less pollution there will be.
