Moving abroad for higher studies or work and eventually acquiring citizenship in a different country to start a new life is very common among Indian youths these days. While there are undoubtedly several benefits to this, such mass migration of youngsters is turning into a ballooning crisis in states like Punjab and Kerala.
With most youngsters now settled in foreign countries, it is not uncommon to see 'ghost villages' in these states, where only a few elderly people are left.
Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, who goes by the name ¡°The Liver Doc¡± on social media, recently shared an anecdote that could be the future of many Indian villages.
According to Dr. Philips, an elderly patient and his wife came to him for a review after a journey that took them 10 hours for the round trip.
Given the difficult journey the couple had undertaken, the doctor offered the patient the option to consult him online, but the elderly man turned it down, saying he did not have a smartphone.
"So I told him to ask his children to help him. He said both his sons were in the Middle East. So I advised that he call his neighbour's children or some youngster who stayed near his house to help him with the app," Dr. Philips said in his post on X.
What happened next is concerning and could serve as a warning for many.
"He tells me that there are no youngsters for miles near where he stayed, and the whole community is just full of older people like him and his wife. The young people were all in the Middle East, UK, New Zealand, Canada, or Australia. There was one young man who used to come by when they needed some help or travel¡ªa distant nephew of his¡ªbut even he was leaving for New Zealand in a couple of weeks," Dr. Philips wrote.
When asked about what would happen to him if there was a medical emergency, the elderly patient told the doctor that "the grocer and a plumber he knew well stayed nearby, and the grocer had a small car and they will take him if they could get him on his phone in time."
"I am not sure about what the future of this place is when everyone seems to be moving out to better places," Dr. Philips said in his post.
