Political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor has announced the launch of his political outfit, the Jan Suraaj Party, which will make its electoral debut in the Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled for 2025. The party was launched at Veterinary College Ground in Patna on Wednesday, and it was said that 'humanity' was the 'main ideology' of the Jan Suraaj Party, and quality education was its 'supreme goal'.
Kishor also named Manoj Bharti, a Madhubani-born former Indian Foreign Service Officer, as the working president of the party, stating that the latter will hold the post until March, when organisational polls will be held.
Bharti, who belongs to the Dalit community, was selected in line with Kishor's earlier announcement that the party's first president would be a Dalit leader.
Bharti is a 1998 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), who served as India¡¯s ambassador to four countries, including Ukraine and Belarus. He retired from the civil service in March 2023, and his last posting was as the Ambassador of India to Indonesia.
Bharti is also recognised as a seasoned grassroots leader with extensive involvement in social and political activities in rural Bihar.
His leadership in various social movements and reform campaigns, particularly focused on public welfare in rural areas, has earned him a strong regional reputation.
His combination of grassroots experience and commitment to social issues is believed to have made him an ideal choice for this key position in the Jan Suraaj Party.
Before becoming an IFS officer, Bharti did his schooling at Netarhat School, which is now in Jharkhand, and graduated from IIT Kanpur.
He holds a BTech in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and also has an honorary doctorate from Zaporizhzhya State Medical University in Ukraine.
