In a remarkable feat, 49-year-old Police Inspector Dwarka Vishwanath Dokhe has become the first female officer from the Maharashtra Police Force to scale Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.?Dokhe reached the summit on Wednesday at 4:10 am, where she spent a few minutes singing the national anthem and waving both the Indian tricolour and the Maharashtra police flag. The Maharashtra police's official X handle shared photos capturing her journey.
¡°No challenge is too big for our Police Inspector Dwarka Vishwanath Dokhe as she ascended the world¡¯s highest mountain, Mount Everest,¡± read the caption with her photos.
Speaking to the Times of India (TOI), Dokhe revealed that she dedicated her climb to her late parents, stating, ¡°My sole aim in scaling Mount Everest was to pay tribute to them.¡±
Hailing from Srirampur in Ahmednagar district, Dokhe joined the police force as a sub-inspector through direct recruitment in 2006. An avid climber since 2016, she is currently a Cybercrime Instructor at the Nashik Police Academy. Her fascination with Everest was sparked in 2022 after reading the book 'Saad Deti Him Shikhare'.
As reported by the Marathi daily Sakal, Dokhe¡¯s journey began on March 24, 2024, when she arrived in Kathmandu. Under the guidance of Lakpa Sherpa, she started her ascent from Everest Base Camp on May 17 and reached the summit on May 22. She carried a photo of her parents to the peak as a tribute. After a previous unsuccessful attempt due to health issues, Dokhe¡¯s determination led her to rigorous training, ultimately achieving her goal.
To prepare for her Everest expedition, PI Dokhe adhered to an intense training schedule. This included running 15 km three times a week, walking on a treadmill with a 60-degree incline while carrying over 210 kilograms on her back for two hours daily, and repeatedly climbing the stairs of an eight-story building every other day.?

She also incorporated full-body workouts into her regimen. Besides her climbing achievements, Dokhe?imparted her knowledge of cybercrime at the Maharashtra Police Academy and was honoured with a Marathi book about glaciers during her tenure at the Pune police commissioner.

Meanwhile, on May 23, Nepali climber Phunjo Lama set a new record by becoming the fastest woman to ascend Everest. As reported by CNN Travel, Lama completed the climb from Everest Base Camp to the summit in 14 hours and 31 minutes, with the entire journey, including descent, taking 23 hours and 49 minutes. She started at 3:52 p.m. and reached the summit at 6:23 a.m. the following day.
