A Srinagar city couple in J&K in their30s are now the parents to a healthy two-month-old baby after six miscarriagesand medical terminations for the last five years which they believe is ¡®miraclebaby¡¯ and a dream come true.? ?
The reason is primarily due to neural tube defects (a kind of birth defect in the brain or the spinal cord) in the foetus.
The delivery of mother of the child, ateacher in a private school in Srinagar took place in May at a hospital inChandigarh.
This delivery has given them a ray of hope as others were advising termination of pregnancy.
Medical experts say the case proves thatnot all babies with birth defects should be terminated and with expert guidancesome pregnancies can have healthy and happy outcomes.
¡°The woman, while undergoing treatment inSrinagar, had three miscarriages and three medical termination of pregnancy dueto neural-tube defects in the form of dilated ventricles (fluid filled swollencavities in brain) in foetuses. Twins were lost in one pregnancy,¡± Dr SeemaSharma, associate director, department of gynaecology and obstetrics at aprivate group of hospitals in Chandigarh told Hindustan Times.
The newborn¡¯s mother called her baby a ¡®totally miraculous¡¯ one.
¡°In Kashmir, we had been advised toterminate the pregnancy by multiple doctors including foetal experts. Everyonewas saying that we should not go ahead with this pregnancy. However, we wantedto go ahead with this pregnancy,¡± she told HT.
¡°I had been disheartened after the loss ofsix babies following her marriage to a senior multinational corporationexecutive in 2016,¡± she added.
Dr Seema Sharma said the couple came tothem in 2021 for a second opinion after they were advised termination inSrinagar.
¡°The baby had a structural defect in thebrain. There was a dilated ventricle meaning a little swelling in the brain. Icannot comment on her previous pregnancies in Srinagar but when she came to usfor a second opinion, we found that the defect in her baby was not that major,¡±she said, adding that the mother was also adamant about going ahead with thepregnancy.
Neural tube defects are extreme congenitalproblems, which develop in the womb of the mother in early months and whenborn, in extreme cases, may have fluid-filled sac like bulges in spine orbrain, may have portions of their brain or skull missing or even an opening intheir skulls. The exact causes are mostly unknown but may be a combination ofgenetic, nutritional or environmental.
