Mob Burns Manipur Minister's Private Godown To Ashes In Fresh Violence, Attempts To Torch Residence

Manipur minister L Susindro's private godown at Chingarel in Imphal East district has been torched by a group of people, reducing it to ashes, police said on Saturday. No casualty was reported.?

This incident follows an inspection undertaken by Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh recently to establish pre-fabricated homes for people displaced by violence in the state.?

Mob also targetted his residence?

An attempt was also made to torch another property of the consumer and food affairs minister and his residence at Khurai in the same district on Friday night, but timely intervention prevented it.?

Security forces had to fire several rounds of tear gas shells till midnight to prevent the mob from surrounding his Khurai residence and burning it down, police said.?

Pre-fabricated homes?

Earlier this week, CM Biren Singh had said that the state government has decided to build 3,000-4,000 pre-fabricated houses within two months to accommodate people who had to flee from their houses during the ongoing violence in the northeastern state that claimed more than 100 lives.

Prefabricated homes are ready-made structures that are constructed off-site and assembled at the place where the homes will be set up.?

No end in sight to violence?

There seems to be no end to the violence that hit Manipur after an ethnic clash on May 3, 2023.?

The violence began in the first week of May after a rally by the indigenous communities (including the Kuki community) against moves to grant tribal status to the main ethnic group (Meiti) in the State.?

It soon spiralled into a serious ethnic clash.Houses have been ransacked and vandalised, vehicles set on fire, thousands displaced, and many killed in cold blood.?

Mobs on a rampage?

On June 14, the official quarters of the state's minister, Nemcha Kipgen, in Imphal West district was set on fire.?

The following day, a house belonging to Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh was attacked, and attempts were made to burn it down.?

"Law and order condition in Manipur is a total failure. The existing government could not maintain peace, that's why the central government has sent a lot of protections and Rapid Action Force. I don't know how the state mechanism is failure, I feel like that," Singh, who was in Kerala then, said.

Hours later, mob tried to set the house of Biswajeet, MLA, on fire while another group attempted to vandalise the home of Sharda Devi, BJP (women's wing) president, near Porampet in Imphal.??
