As Covid-19 cases continue to rise across the country the demand for medical oxygen has also increased manifold - from both hospitals and those in home isolation.
But as the demand grows suppliers are struggling to meet the new orders, which is putting many who are in urgent need of Oxygen to stay alive.
As the authorities continue to struggle with shortages, the Lions club in Ahmedabad launched a portable oxygen machine bank in the city.
The initiative is aimed at providing oxygen machines to critically ill patients at home.?
According to a release, the Lions District 3232 came up with a novel project to augment the availability of portable oxygen machines through which portable oxygen machines will be given to critical patients at home. Under this unique initiative, patients will get 5 and 10-litre capacity portable oxygen machines for home treatment.
"In today's challenging time we are very satisfied with the introduction of portable oxygen machines. Cases of corona are increasing rapidly and I am confident that patients with serious illnesses will definitely get relief from the portable oxygen machine when there are not enough beds available in the hospitals. Various initiatives have been taken by the Lions Club to help people during the pandemic and the portable oxygen machine is just one part of this initiative," Pravin Chhajed, who had served as the International Director of Lions Club said.
The Oxygen bank is running on donations by its members and currently has 50 such machines for Ahmedabad Centre. The club is targeting to increase over 1000 machines in the near future.
On Friday, the Gujarat High Court had pulled up the state government over the COVID-19 situation in the state.?
The court observed that the hospitals were exploiting the situation even in these desperate times. "Hospitals are not admitting patients who need oxygen... I fail to understand why people even at this time are looking to make a fast buck. Even oxygen is being black-marketed," the Chief Justice said.
