On Republic Day, the house of R Rangama in Thekkampatti, Tamil Nadu was full of people. She had just been conferred the Padma Shri and people were coming to congratulate her. As per a report in The New Indian Express, Rangama is 105 years old and has been a long proponent of organic farming. In fact, she has been involved in it since she was in her 30s.
Also known as Pappammal, Rangama's journey began when she bought a 10-acre plot with money she earned from running a store. Since then she has taken up the path of organic farming. As of now, she owns 2.5 acres of land where bananas and ladies' fingers are cultivated.
Rangama has also served in the TN Agricultural University¡¯s advisory committee. She would take part in conferences and keep herself informed on the developments in organic farming which then she put to use.
The lady also had her little tryst with politics. She was a ward member of the Thekkampatti panchayat and elected as a councillor in the Karamadai panchayat union.?
But Rangama's passion has been organic farming in which she has been involved for the better part of her life. Humble and simple in her way of life, Rangama is still following her passion wholeheartedly despite being in the century club. After all, age is just a number as they say.??
