Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commissioned India¡¯s first indigenous Scorpene-class submarine, Kalvari, into the Indian Navy. Dubbed as India's deadliest submarine, the INS Kalvari was indigenously built at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai in September this year.

The submarine, which has a length of 67.5 metres and height of 12.3 metres is the first of six the Scorpene submarines being built at Mazagon Dock, under licence from French firm Naval Group.
The 1,565-tonne submarine derives its name from the dreaded tiger shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.?

The stealth submarine is capable of Man o¡¯ War, undertaking offensive operations spanning across the entire spectrum of Maritime Warfare, and has advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro dynamically optimised shape and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision-guided weapons thus increasing the stealth capacity of the Indian Navy.

The second submarine in the series, INS Khanderi is expected to be commissioned by mid-2018, with the third INS Karanj following by early-2019. All the six are to be inducted by 2020-2021 at a total project cost of Rs 23,652 crore.
