It appears like it is impossible to make some people aware of the threat of coronavirus, and their mindless act for the sake of their convenience can cause a huge inconvenience to society. That is what a senior railway official in Karnataka did.?
The gazetted ranked railway officer of South Western Railway zone in Bengaluru allegedly took her son who had returned to Bengaluru from Germany via Spain on March 13 to the Officers Rest House (ORH) near the KSR Railway Station.
This was after he was advised at the Bengaluru Airport to remain in home isolation. But, his mother, identified as Assistant Personnel Officer (Traffic) Nagalatha Guruprasad, secretly took him to the ORH on March 17.?
After his condition deteriorated the next day he was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Disease (RGICD) where he tested positive for Covid-19.It was only after he tested positive the Railway officials came to know about Nagalatha's actions which have put hundreds of passengers and railway officials at risk of contracting the virus. She also attended office for days after coming into contact with her son.?
After the incident came to light, the ¡®Maples¡¯ Rest House has stopped the allotment of suites as a preventive measure. The Railways, in the meantime, has suspended Nagalatha from service for ¡°posing a potential public health hazard¡±.?
This is the third such case of serious neglect that has caused the Coronavirus panic.?
In a similar incident, an 18-year-old UK-return in Kolkata had skipped the mandatory hospital isolation using his bureaucrat mother's influence and went home. Even at home, he did not isolate himself, but went out and even met his mother in her office in the state secretariat.A day after this, his condition deteriorated and was admitted to the hospital and was tested positive for Covid-19. Following this, his parents and driver too have been kept in isolation. He had reportedly contracted the virus after he attended a party in the UK.?
Before that, there was a similar incident in Kerala, where a three-member family who had returned from Italy hid their travel history to avoid the screening at the airport and this resulted in them passing on the infection to more people.?
In recent days there have also been several instances where people who had returned from abroad who were asked to be on home quarantine defied the advice and were venturing out. Four of them were caught form a train in Maharashtra while they were trying to flee to Delhi.
