Mumbai which was ranked the second-most congested city in the world in 2020 slightly improved its position in 2021 and slipped to the 5th position.
According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2021, the Turkish city of Istanbul overtook Moscow to become the most congested city, followed by Kyiv in Ukraine, Bogota in Colombia and Mumbai in the top five.
Bengaluru which came sixth in the index in 2020 improved its ranking to 10th in 2021.
The national capital New Delhi which was at the 8th spot in 2020 was at the 11th position in the list that ranked 404 cities in 58 countries globally based on their traffic congestion.
Mumbai had a congestion level of 53 per cent and an average Mumbaikar lost 121 hours in 2021 stuck in traffic.
According to TomTom, a 53% congestion level means that a 30-minute trip will take 53% more time than it would during baseline uncongested conditions.
The congestion level of both Bengaluru and Delhi were at 48 per cent each and an average citizen lost 110 hours a year due to traffic.
Mumbai had just one day of higher traffic congestion levels than in 2019.
On August 21, the traffic congestion level in Mumbai was 88 per cent.
Bengaluru did not record even a single day which had a higher traffic level than that of 2019 and the most congested day in the city last year was October 9 at 75 %.
Delhi had three days of higher traffic congestion than that of 2019 and the most congested day in 2021 was August 21 at 71 %.
As far as India as a whole is concerned, India had just two days of traffic congestion higher than the 2019 levels, while on 54 days it was lower than that of the pre-pandemic year.
August 21 was the day with the highest traffic congestion in India in 2021.
The 11th edition of its annual TomTom Traffic Index found that travel last year was still strongly influenced by the effects of the health crisis.?
In 2021 again, traffic was lower than 2019, which can be used as the baseline of pre-COVID times. Worldwide, congestion is 10% lower vs. 2019, with a decrease of 19% specifically at peak hours. Out of the 404 cities included in the Index, 283 experienced lower average congestion than in 2019. However, many cities have shown extreme fluctuations in traffic across the year, going from extreme lows during travel restrictions to extreme highs when restrictions were lifted, the report stated.
